At Injury Therapy Pro, we pride ourselves on delivering thorough, evidence-informed osteopathic care focused on understanding the root cause of pain and injury. Diagnostic Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound enhances this approach by providing detailed, real-time insight into muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints, supporting precise assessment and confident clinical decision-making.

What is MSK ultrasound?

MSK ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to create live images of soft tissues in the body. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, it does not use radiation, making it extremely safe and suitable for repeated use when clinically appropriate.

Because it produces real-time images, ultrasound allows us to assess structures both at rest and during movement, which is particularly useful for understanding how an injury behaves during everyday activities.

The benefits of MSK ultrasound

Supports accurate diagnosis
Ultrasound helps confirm or rule out suspected injuries, allowing treatment plans to be more targeted and effective.

Quick and convenient
Scans are performed in-clinic with a qualified sonographer, keeping your care in-house and avoiding long waits or multiple referrals.

Safe and gentle
Ultrasound uses sound waves only. There is no radiation, and no known harmful effects.

Comfortable and non-invasive
The scan involves a small handheld probe and ultrasound gel applied to the skin. Most patients find it painless and straightforward.

Real-time assessment
We can observe tissues as they move, helping identify issues that may not be obvious during a static examination.

How ultrasound fits into our osteopathic care pathway

Your osteopath will begin with a thorough history and physical examination. If ultrasound is clinically appropriate, it may be recommended to:

  • Clarify the nature of an injury

  • Confirm suspected tendon, muscle, or joint pathology

  • Monitor healing and recovery over time

  • Guide treatment planning and rehabilitation strategies

The findings are explained clearly and in plain language, so you understand what is happening and why certain treatments are recommended.

Ultrasound is particularly useful for acute and sports injuries, persistent pain, and cases where progress has plateaued and further clarity is helpful.

Commonly scanned areas

  • Shoulder

  • Elbow

  • Elbow

  • Wrist and hand

Conditions that may be assessed

  • Muscle strains and tears

  • Ligament sprains

  • Bursitis

  • Joint effusions (fluid within joints)

What we DO NOT scan

To ensure transparency and patient safety, it’s important to note that our MSK ultrasound service does not include:

  • Scanning of lumps or bumps

  • Head, neck, or spinal ultrasound

  • Hernia assessment

If these are concerns, we will always advise on the most appropriate referral pathway.

A clearer path to recovery

By combining hands-on osteopathic care with diagnostic MSK ultrasound, we aim to provide a more complete, confident, and personalised approach to your recovery. The goal is not just to identify what’s wrong, but to help you understand your body, engage with your care, and move forward with clarity.

If you’d like to know whether MSK ultrasound may be appropriate for you, please speak to your osteopath or contact the clinic, we’re always happy to help.
